Stand Up Paddling with News 13

SUP Eco Adventures was lucky enough to be able to host a team from News 13 who brought their camera’s with them. They put together a great spot which shows both Dina and myself out on a beautiful day on the Indian River Lagoon, out with the dolphin and mangroves. The water was calm and the day was crisp and clean, a perfect day to be out on the water. Check it out and tell us what you think on our facebook page. www.facebook.com/supecoadventures.

Stand up paddle surfing overcomes small waves

Here is a story from Florida today which talks about how to use stand up paddle surfing.

SUP is more than a way to get around limits on text messaging. It’s actually an acronym for stand-up paddle surfing.

For some, it’s a new way to catch small waves and beat the flatness that plagues Central Florida’s surf every summer. For others, these oversized surfboards are family entertainment, a flats fisherman’s dream or a hardcore workout machine.

week with my brother’s family several years back, this summer I
decided to pack up my wife, 16 year old daughter and 13 year old son
to head out for an all american family vacation. I packed up the
family car and started the drive with visions of my wife bikini clad

Atlantic’s Smoothing Out

Standing on the Space Coast beaches, it’s not hard to see why kayaking and paddling have been such a great activity around the Cocoa Beach and Melbourne Beach.  Now more and more people are discovering the new sport of stand up paddle boarding.  Kayaking allows people to get out on the ocean without needing a motor and allows them to take advantage of the miles of beautiful beaches.  But, kayaking limits individuals to one position and hampers their view into the water.

Barrier Island Eco Camp

Barrier Island Eco Explores Kids Camp

SUP Eco Adventures is proud to be part of a great summer kid’s camp, sponsored by the Barrier Island Center just south of Melbourne Beach, Florida.  The camp is dedicated helping children learn about the world around them.  In addition to learning about the environment, the kids also have the opportunity to take part in several exciting activities including snorkeling, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.  Kids learn how to snorkel one day, then get to head out into the Sebastian Inlet.  Next, the kids have the opportunity to kayak to one of the spoil islands and take part in a cleanup effort.  The kids kayak back to the eastern shore towards Sebastian and Palm Bay.  Then an entire day is dedicated to stand up paddle boarding, which is of course what we here at SUP Eco Adventures love.  Each child is taught the fundamentals of stand up paddling and then taken on a tour of the Indian River Lagoon.  Finally, children get to go on a turtle evening hike.

Kayaking in Cocoa Beach

Kayaking in Cocoa Beach has been dominated for years by six companies, but now SUP Eco Adventures is looking to change this.  The use of the Thousand Islands area in Cocoa Beach has been regulated for years by the Cocoa Beach City Council.  The current regulations only allow for five Kayak companies to operate in the southern half of the Thousand Islands area.  This has limited the number of Kayak companies who have access to this natural area of Cocoa Beach.

Surf’s Calming Atlantic

Now with the temperature warming up on Florida’s East Coast the Atlantic waves are getting smaller. Cocoa Beach, Melbourne Beach, and Sebastian Inlet are all known for their surf and people come from around the world.  These are Orlando’s closest beaches and are where millions of people come to ride the waves, but as the summer rolls in, the waves get smaller and some days the ocean is glassy, not a wave in sight.  This would normally lead to people staying on the beach and not being able to ride the liquid world, but now with more and more people discovering stand up paddle boarding, surfing year round is becoming reality.

Archie Carr Refuge

Archie Carr tours SUP Eco Adventures

SUP Eco Adventures’ tours run in a secluded area of the Space Coast on Florida’s Central East Coast.  We operate in within minutes of the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge.  The Archie Carr National Refuge is about 20 miles long between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach at the south end of Brevard county.  The refuge was established in 1991 and named after Dr. Archie Carr and his extraordinary contribution to sea turtle conservation.  The refuge is a direct result of Dr. Carr bringing attention to the world’s declining turtle populations due to over-exploitation and loss of safe habitat.  The refuge protects the most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the Western Hemisphere and the most significant area for green turtle nesting in North America.  This area 25-35% of all loggerhead and green sea turtle nests in the US.

30 Days and 30 Ways to enjoy Florida

30 Days & 30 Ways to Enjoy Florida; Day 7, Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

You’ve seen it in People Magazine, on travel sites and on the Internet. SUP. Also known as Stand-up Paddle Boarding. Take a surf board on steroids, a long paddle, get on board, stand up and get going. Surfing while standing up… ok, not in the surf catching the waves (at least not until you’re really good I guess) but touring the inlets and beaches of Florida. Ride it alone, catch a ride – and a wave – and sit on top of the world (gotta love the Beach Boys) and check out the water action from atop one of these big babies.

For the rest of the article and other great ways to enjoy Florida, check out Rori Travels Florida .
